Rejected Retro Logo

These are a couple of variations of a rejected logo from a project, which now seems to have been canceled by the client. They actually ended up going with a different name for the business, but it appears they aren’t going to open the business after all.  Never in my life have I worked with a client like this, nevertheless, I am pretty pleased with the logo itself.

Book Store Logo

Not a real book store as far as I know (although I wish it was). This is just an old practice logo that was cluttering up my head, so I finally let it out.

Bombshell Grand Opening Flyer

It's been a long time since I've posted here, but I've been busy on a number of things, Anyway, I just finished up this design for the grand opening of the brand new Bombshell Brazilian location in West Broad Village. The design features a combination of retro fonts and vintage art. If you're in the Richmond area you should definitely check them out. The specials listed are available through October.

Candy Coat Beauty Logo Project

Hey kids! It has been a long time since I've posted here, I have just been super busy with a flurry of projects and re-organizing my business, too, so the blog has kind of taken a back seat. Anyway, I just finished this logo design for Melissa over at Bombshell Brazilian. They are releasing their own line of beauty products called Candy Coat Beauty, which will feature nail polish and the like. I don't believe it is available at the moment, but it will soon be carried in both Bombshell locations. So, if you're in the Richmond, Virginia area, you'll want to keep your eyes peeled.

New Business Name Part II

Many years ago I started a sketch blog, and as part of the collateral material I created for it, I came up with a crazy pencil character. The original pencil-guy was actually farting, but I've pulled the fart out, not because I've suddenly become soft and delicate, but design-wise it just wasn't happening. At some point, however, I may do a new version featuring the fart in all of its resplendent glory, so we'll just have to see.

Anyway, since I've started doing business under my own name now, instead of Vintage 66 Graphics (although a complete change over will take some time), I pulled this guy out of mothballs, mainly because I wanted an example of the slightly different style direction I plan to go. Certainly, I will still use all the cool retro and vintage elements that I have been using for the past 5 years, but this style will have more of a bold and edgy feel, a more pronounced punk rock feel. I think that somewhere along the line I began trying to recreate the Mid-century rather than just use it as an influence. So now I'm back on the right path with the best yet to come, and I'm glad to have you along for the ride.

Cheers!
Robert

New Name Coming Soon!

I'm making some changes here, but don’t be alarmed (because I know how my little hunk of the blogi-sphere is the high point of your day). I’ll go into the whys and wherefores more a little later, or maybe I’ll just keep posting and pretend like nothing ever happened—like when you fart in the grocery store and just keep walking and hope nobody heard, or if they did that they just thought it was a shoe squeak or something. Nevertheless, the content and subject matter is pretty much going to be the same, except a bit more edgy and more of a crunchy punk rock feel, but I am now doing business under my own name, Robert N. Wiles,  instead of Vintage 66 Graphics.

My new logo since I'm doing business under my own name.
There seems to be some sort of image discrepancy when you click on it, maybe because I used a png file instead of a jpg for this. I'm too tired to fix it now, but I'll try to remember later.

Tiki Leftovers

Last night I ran across this little bit inking practice, which is left over from when I submitted a few pieces for a tiki themed art show a few years ago. Neither of these studies ended up as part of a final piece, but I still think they have a certain amount charm, and I've been getting the Tiki Itch lately, so they could become  part of something one of these days soon.

Project: Hellbetty Postcards

This is a variation on a postcard design I did recently for Hellbetty Jewelry. They are releasing a new product called wine charms, which are like bling for your wine glass, but each one is different so you can also use it to identify your glass at a party if you set it down for a minute. These cards are multipurpose, since they are not only promotional postcards, but they serve as the product packaging card as well. Wine charms will  soon be available in sets of six at select locations and directly form Hellbetty as well.

Project: Atomic City Whimsy

I just finished up this double-sided business card design for Atomic City Whimsy on Etsy. They specialize in cool vintage decor, handmade jewelry and crushed glass art. They've got some real nifty stuff, so you'll want to check them out from time to time.

As for the design itself, we went with a bold mid-century modern look featuring a solid populuxe flavor, with this strong diamond pattern in orange and aqua, and finished it off with a couple of tasty retro fonts (Dairyland & Mister Television) from Font Diner.

Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss

Today is the late Dr. Seuss' birthday, he would have been 108. It feels like I should have so much to say about an artist that I hold in such high esteem, but honestly, is there anything that hasn't already been said about the good doctor and his contribution to the art and literary worlds? Is there any praise that hasn't already been heaped on him many times over? I can't think of a thing, and so I will simply let his own artwork speak, and I think nothing would be more apropos than a selection of images from his 1959 book, The Birthday Bird (from Random House Books). Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss, or Mr. Geisel if you prefer.

Retro Business Card Designs: One More

Retro business card design featuring vintage clip art and retro fonts.

This is the straggler of the series of business card design examples I posted earlier. I ran into a  bit of design funk on this one, so I just let it sit for a couple of days and then came back to it. It features a horizontal design on the front and a vertical design on the back with retro fonts and authentic vintage art from (probably) the 50's.

Cheers!

Retro Business Card Designs

A retro business card design inspired by the classic cars of the MCM era.

Vintage bowling alleys were the inspiration for this business card design.

This design would be perfect for anyone looking for a bit of a vintage flair.

I just wanted to show off some of the new business card design examples that I've been working on. These all have a Mid-Century Modern look to them, but in the future I'm thinking about maybe delving into the Art Deco and Streamline Moderne periods for something retro, yet different.

Thanks for stopping by.

Today is my youngest niece's twenty-second birthday and this is the card I did for her, because what says Happy Birthday better than a banjo playing turtle?

Beach Study: Twin Rocks

Twin Rocks; watercolor and white gouache on 300 lb cold press paper.
I'm planning to offer some hand painted greeting cards in my Etsy shop later this month, so I've been working on my watercolor chops. This is Twin Rocks, Oregon, which is just south of Rockaway on Highway 101. Not familiar with Rockaway? It's a bit north of Tillamook (like the cheese), if that helps.

New Logo for Your Business

Behold the almighty logo, whether it’s fun and quirky or more of the stately and elegant variety, the logo is the face of any business. A well designed logo brands your business and tells your customers  who you are and what you deliver. On the other hand, a poorly designed logo can have a disastrous effect on a company’s image, giving the wrong impression, sending mixed messages, or even worse—giving an unintentional, embarrassing message.

The arrival of a new year is a great time to look over your business identity. Is it sending the right message to your customers? Is it time for an upgrade—or maybe just a fresh new look? Perhaps you're just starting your business and aren't sure what you need. Whatever the case, I'll be happy to work with you and get you the quality graphic design that fits your needs. Stop by Vintage 66 Graphics today and fill out the handy contact form to get your project started.

New Biz Card for 2012

I'm impatiently waiting for UPS to deliver these from the printer today ( I believe sometime before 7pm.) so in the meantime I just wanted to show off the new Vintage 66 Graphics biz cards for 2012. Both of these images have been slightly modified from the original version to make them look better onscreen, but are essentially the same.

Vintage 66 Biz Card for 2012—Back.

Update: They arrived and they look fantastic! I forgot to mention earlier that I had them printed with a dull matte finish instead of the standard glossy look, and I'm really pleased with the results. Woo-Hoo!!!

How About a New Business Card Design?

Even in the digital age we live in, where everything seems to be done virtually,  the business card is still the proven workhorse of small businesses worldwide. A potential client or customer may meet scads of people in your line between the time you first meet them and the time they need your goods or services. However, a well designed business card can be a great reminder long after your elevator speech has faded from their memory.

For $85 you can get a custom double-sided design in full color, and I'll even throw in 100 professionally printed UV coated business cards on 16pt. stock, delivered right to your door (USA addresses only, contact me for international shipping rates). This is an affordable way to get your new business started on the right foot, or to give your existing business a great new look and nice little boost for the new year. Get yours started today, just fill out the Vintage 66 Contact Form.

Pop Rocket Cosmetics Logo

Here's a project I was hoping to get posted around the holidays, but what with said holidays and other business commitments, I never got the chance. Nevertheless, here is the cute little cowgirl logo I did last month for Pop Rocket Cosmetics, which will be available soon, if not already (I'll try to keep you posted about that). Just as a point of interest, Pop Rocket is put out by the same folks who run Bombshell Brazilian Waxing & Beauty Lounge, in Richmond, Virginia, and as luck would have it,  I also did that logo as well.
